Golfing in Cyprus|
Cyprus is a relative newcomer to the golfing vacation market, but it is a favorite with many tourists due to new, world-class golfing facilities, the warm climate, great hotels, and terrific hospitality of the people. This scenic island has three golf courses with challenging courses for players of all skill levels. Many golf packages are available. Golfing vacationers can also choose to stay in Cyprus holiday apartments which offer more privacy and facilities than a hotel room.
Aphrodite Hills Resort
Cyprus, the mythical birthplace of the goddess of love, Aphrodite, claims the new Aphrodite Hills Resort, near Paphos. It boasts an 18 hole championship course, a pro shop, a golfing academy (with PGA qualified golf professionals), and a clubhouse with a bar and restaurant. The course is located on two high plateaus, with views of the Mediterranean, and is divided by a breathtaking ravine. On the 7th hole, the ravine divides the tees from the greens! There are pot bunkers, green fairways, and tiered greens. Golf carts are mandatory. There are competition and regular tees for men and two sets for women. Part of the course is marked for the average player and pro tees comprise the entire course. No expense has been spared on this course which was designed by Cabell Robinson; it is comparable to any in the world. A large hotel is being built that will have a health spa. Par is 70/71.
The Secret Valley Golf Club
The two other new golf courses are also near Paphos. This course opened in 1996 and is located in a spectacular valley with colourful rock formations and many mature trees. Secret Valley was designed by Iacovos Iacovou. Par on the 18 hold course is 71. Hole 13 is the greatest challenge. If you overshoot it, you are out of bounds; if you don't make the green in one, you could end up in the water. The course offers sand traps, bunkers, and lakes. Facilities at Secret Valley include putting greens, chipping areas, and a driving range. Classes are offered by the PGA qualified golf teacher. The clubhouse has a pro shop, locker rooms, and a bar and restaurant that overlook the course. A tennis court is available. In Paphos, popular restaurants and bars will provide plenty of evening entertainment even for the most active night owls.
Tsada Golf Club
Tsada Golf Club, designed by Donald Steel, is located 20 minutes behind the town of Paphos, in the hills. The cool sea breezes that blow in the summer make for a delightful experience. Tsada opened in 1994 and is part of the monastery of Stavros tis Minthis. Occasionally, monks will be seen in the monastery gardens. The 18 hold course provides quite a challenge to golfers as the fairways are very tight. Par is 71. Most fairways have uphill, downhill, or side hill slopes, many lined with fruit trees and grape vines. The putting surfaces are smooth and green. The 14th hole plays from an elevated tee, across a ravine to a green set on the side of a hill! The course has rolling greens, winding fairways, and three streams. The Golf Club has a restaurant, bar, tennis court, driving range, putting green, and a pitching and chipping area. The pro shop includes a boutique. A PGA professional offers assistance.
Conclusion Cyprus has entered the golfing vacation market with three excellent golf courses that challenge players of all skill levels. Soon more courses will join Aphrodite Hills Resort, The Secret Valley Golf Club, and Tsada Golf Club, but even now Cyprus is well worth a visit from dedicated golfers.
