This course plays much longer than its yardage indicates. The first two holes can lull a first-time visitor into a relaxed state of mind because they measure only a few hundred yards in length with no real hazards involved. Then over the span of the next eight holes, golfers must face five par 4's measuring over 400 yards in length. Hole #6, a 456-yard, par 4, is by far the most difficult hole on the course. It forces the average golfer to play the hole more like a par 5, or least nail a fairway wood on the approach shot if they plan on putting for a birdie. The course's terrain is also a factor, including tree-lined fairways, elevated greens and many changes in elevation. The somewhat sloped greens vary between medium to large in size, are a little on the firm side, and are well bunkered with average speed. The Long Beach Open is held here every July. " Course Description The 18 hole Recreation Park Golf Course was the original Stately
Virginia Country Club Course. The Colonial Clubhouse appears
out of place in Long Beach, however the course is a very nice
course to play. It is not a long course, only 6,374 yards
from the Blue Tees, but it is challenging. My handicap is 21,
but my lowest score is 87 on this course.
Normally my score is in the 90's on this course.
I have heard a lot of golfers say it is a very easy course,
but they shot 15 - 20 over par - so I would say it is not
that easy or they would have been closer to par.
To do well on this course you have to take advantage of the
two short par 4's No 1 & No 2). Hole No. 6 is probably
the toughest, a 460 yard par 4. Some of the fairways are
hilly, with one playing all the way uphill to the green.
It gives many uphill or downhill lies, just enough to
perhaps mess up a shot or two. (5 or 10 sometimes)
The par 3's are not long, but can be tricky, elevated
green, valley green and well protected by bunkers.
There are enough trees to cause concern and the roughs
are moderate. The greens difficulty depend upon the pin
placement, but would average moderate on my difficulty scale.
All in all, this is a good course to play, and my only
problem is the slow play, my rounds here have taken between
5-6 hours. I play it 8-10 times/year.
