Some Good Metallurgical and Mineral Process Laboratories
and Process Development/Design Firms

A few large mining companies have the capacity to conduct in house process R&D, extensive metallurgical testing, to determine properties of ore bodies, and the most cost effective methods to recover the valuable part of the ore. However, many medium and small sized mining companies do not have such capabilities.

The purpose of this article is to give a bit of information about two such laboratories in the USA.

The first is Hazen Research, Inc, located in Golden Colorado. In their own words, "our services include laboratory-scale research on new processes or adaptation of known technology to new situations, followed by pilot plant demonstration, preliminary engineering, and cost analysis. Projects range from beaker-scale experiments and analyses to multimillion-dollar continuous pilot or demonstration plants." Their website is: Hazen Research

The second is Dawson Metallurgical Laboratories, now part of FL Smidth. They are a metallurgical lab and R & D center with capabilities to include metallurgical testing of ores, determining the most cost effective method to recover valuables form ore, process development, flowsheet layout and plant design. They have considerable expertise in precious metals, base metals and industrial minerals. In their own words, "our services include laboratory-scale research on new processes or adaptation of known technology to new situations, followed by pilot plant demonstration, preliminary engineering, and cost analysis. Dawson Metallurgical is located in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Myself and my customers have used both over the past 20 or so years, and I can heartily recommend both for limited, or extensive process, metallurgical testing or design work for mining applications.
