Louvre, Paris France

The Louvre Main Building -   The Louvre was originally a medieval fortress, built in 1200 during Philippe Auguste's reign, on a location at which Paris's defenses were weakest. The site was called Lupara, which became Louvre. Charles V enlarged the original building in 1370, and turned it into a royal residence. In 1546, Francois I decided to replace the original building by a Renaissance style building. Construction continued, adding buildings, through the Napoleon reign in the late 1800's. The Louvre became a Museum in the last part of the 18th century (during the French Revolution). Exhibits in the Louvre tend to follow a time line, the earliest to the latest, and one can "walk through time" by starting in the basement, where the earliest exhibits are located
